Jam Bands like The Grateful Dead, Phish and Widespread Panic are known for awesome, extended improv sections and solos. The free jam tracks here on GuitarTeacher.com are perfect vehicles for practicing your own extended solos, awesome or otherwise! So today I am pairing a jam track with the jam band. For your noodling pleasure, a Latin/Rock/Samba/Blues/Wait-For-My-Cue-Before-Ending-My Solo/Jam Band jam track.

This track vamps groovily between C and Bb major chords. These chords can be analyzed as the V and IV chords in the key of F major (see our Guitar Harmony Chart post if you doubt). Since the C chord sounds like “home” (at least to my ears) I prefer to base my improvisation off of the C root. C Mixolydian is 5th mode of the F major scale and makes a fine soloing choice. The Major Pentatonic is a safe and smooth sounding alternative off the C root. Try both, mix and match!
Here are some suggested scale patterns:

Now begin soloing, only pausing for the occasional necessary string change every 3rd or 4th day.

@DJ – And we have a winner! Thanks for the kind comments, too. I will be in touch about setting up your guitar lessons.
I clicked through to your blog(s) as well. Good stuff there!
Congrats DJ…
@Storm – I will work on these lessons and see where this takes me. I will admit that I am still a little slow on the guitar but I am seeing improvements here and there. I am really starting to scare myself here. I think I need to work on an easy song to mix it up, but the finger exercises and warms are my thing at the moment. And now I have these scale patterns to work on…
My favorite guitarist is … anyone that can work magic on the guitar.
thanx i love this…………….
